Michael Keenan and the Liberals have failed to keep their promises to the Gosnells community.

In the dying days of the election campaign, Justice Minister Keenan and the Liberal candidate committed $150,000 to the City of Gosnells for upgraded or new CCTV at local libraries, the civic centre and the Gosnells skate park to address crime issues.

The Liberals also committed a further $50,000 to Amaroo Village for CCTV and sensor lighting.

But Michael Keenan has now backflipped on this commitment and asked the City of Gosnells and Amaroo Village to apply for this funding under a grant program that hasn’t even been set up yet.

Michael Keenan wrote to the Council and the Village recently informing them that in order for the commitment to be implemented, “the next step will be for your organisation to submit an application to support the commitment of funds under the Safer Communities Fund”.

Not only is Michael Keenan asking for applications for funding that has already been announced, but he is now saying the application process will not even be made available until the end of 2016.

We still don’t even know if the Liberals have the funding to honour their commitments to Gosnells. Deep in the letter, Michael Keenan says these important community safety projects will be subject to “Government Budget processes”.

Michael Keenan and the Liberals were happy to stand with the Gosnells community during the election campaign but, just months later, they no longer care about tackling crime in our local area.

This is just another example of a government failing to stand by its commitments.

“We are really disappointed that Michael Keenan has promised money to a community struggling with crime and then taken it away after the election,” Shadow Justice Minister Clare O’Neil said.

“Once again we have an example of a Liberal Government talking big before an election, then walking away soon after,” Member for Burt Matt Keogh said.

“Residents at Amaroo Village and across the Gosnells community were promised these funds to help improve community safety – it is highly disappointing the see the Liberals walking away from Gosnells, with one of the highest crimes rates in WA, now that they no longer hold the seat.”

Michael Keenan and the Liberals said they were committed to making our streets and communities safer. Labor calls on Michael Keenan to explain to communities why he and the Liberals won’t honour their promise.
