Matthew and his wife have lived in the City of Vincent for 5 years, not far from where his father grew up. Matthew currently works as a solicitor in the Litigation Practice Group at Freehills, having previously worked as a Principal Legal Officer with
the Perth Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in the Commercial Prosecutions branch. In 2009 Matthew was the Australian Young Lawyer
of the Year.
Matthew is currently the Chairperson of the Australian Young Lawyers Committee of the Law Council of Australia and Convenor of
the Young Lawyers Committee of The Law Society of Western Australia,
of which he is also a Member of Council. In addition, Matthew
is a member of the Society's Access to Justice, Education, Equal
Opportunity and Brief Editorial
Committees as well as a member of the Law Council of Australia's
Australian Young Lawyers Committee. Matthew also helps out locally
as a member of the Financial Advisory Committee for the Sisters of
Mercy (Amalgamated) Inc and is a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Highgate.
Matthew completed a Bachelor of
Arts with First Class Honours at the University of Notre Dame
Australia, where he also obtained a Bachelor of Law. Whilst at university, Matthew was Communications Director
(2001) and Secretary (2002) of the Student Association of the University of Notre Dame Australia, was involved in a prison
outreach program at Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre run by
Young Vinnies (an arm of St Vincent de Paul) and completed part of his course at the London campus of the University of Notre Dame (US).
Matthew's other
work within the community includes work as the Chairperson and a
Board member of Starick Services Inc., which works to help women and
children who are the victims of domestic violence through refuges and
various outreach and support services. Matthew was also a member of
the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) State Advisory Committee. |
