The Morrison Government is eating the humble pie of failure, with this weeks ANAO Major Projects Report detailing that Defence will now release an Australian Industry Content (AIC) Promotion Plan to tell industry about its plans to increase AIC in Defence Projects.
The much feted launch of the Defence Industrial Capability Plan back in 2018, told Australians it will improve local Industry involvement in projects for years.
However this need for a Promotion Plan confirms the fears of the Australian Industry and Defence Network (AIDN) that the AIC program as implemented is not facilitating development of sovereign industry capability or business opportunities for the local Australian defence supply chain.
If the Governments defence industry plan was working as envisioned, there would be no need for a Promotion Plan now.
AIDN and other key Australian Defence Industry players have been crying out for support in driving defence procurement, here in Australia for some time now.
Under this government, there have been five Defence Ministers and 24 Ministers across the broader Defence portfolio so its really no surprise that Industry now finds itself in this predicament.
As an island nation it is important that we have our own sovereign sustainment and maintenance capacity.
The Morrison Government need to get serious about Australian defence industry jobs that means maximising jobs and training opportunities for the long term, not just in a skilled trades workforce but in the technical knowhow and capability.
