MATT KEOGH MP, SHADOW MINISTER ASSISTING FOR SMALL BUSINESS: Good morning, everybody. It is now just 10 days until JobKeeper comes to an end, and new analysis by Small Business Australia shows that nearly 250,000 small businesses will end up closing when JobKeeper comes to an end on the 28th of March.
It's not just the number of small businesses though, Small Business Australia’s analysis shows that over 488,000 employees will likely become unemployed as a consequence of JobKeeper ending. Now, let's put that into some context. That will represent a 35 per cent increase in the number of people relying on unemployment benefits as a consequence of JobKeeper coming to an end. And of course, the rate of JobKeeper is significantly higher than the rate of JobSeeker that those people will have to rely on when JobKeeper ends and they no longer get that support.
Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenberg have left small business in Australia and their employees high and dry. Only two weeks ago, the government was saying that there will be some form of new support and targeted support after the end of JobKeeper. But instead, all we've seen is a support package for the aviation sector. But nothing for these thousands of small businesses their thousands of employees across Australia that thought there might be something at the end of March, at the end of JobKeeper. And instead they're going to run into the brick wall that is JobKeeper ending in just 10 days time.
